Successful participation in the 26th Willem C. Vis Moot

We are pleased to announce that the team from the University of Osnabrück was able to record a success at the 26th Willem C. Vis Moot in Vienna: the Memorandum for Claimant was awarded an Honorable Mention in the context of the Pieter Sanders Awards, meaning that it was among the best submitted pleadings. With over 370 participating teams from over 80 countries, this is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the team’s efforts. In addition to the supervising chairs, thanks also go out to the alumni and coaches, who were able to pass on their experiences to the team and, thus, contribute to the success. Thanks are also due to the law firms that supported the team financially and/or by organizing law firm pleadings and offering valuable feedback. Without this support, successful participation would hardly have been possible.

Successful Osnabrück participation at the Willem C. Vis Moot Court in Vienna

This year, the University of Osnabrück participated in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, which has been held 23 times, for the 12th time. The Osnabrück team led the way to the main rounds in Vienna via so-called “pre-moots” in Hanover, Brussels and New York City. In addition, regional and national law firms supported the team financially and by offering the opportunity to conduct trial hearings. During the main rounds in Vienna, over 2,000 students from 311 universities in 67 countries had the opportunity to negotiate in about 700 simulated arbitration proceedings the legal consequences of a failed wine transaction.

A particular success of the Osnabrück team is that the plaintiffs’s brief received the Pieter Sanders Award for Best Memorandum for Claimant, making it one of the best briefs submitted. This success is not only attributed to the commitment of the students, but also to the support of the law department, in particular the European Legal Studies Institute, through the provision of literature and feedback on the pleadings and oral hearings by professors and staff.

Franziska Michel, Ida Rüffer and Marko Andjic will be searching for an Osnabrück team for the 24th Willem C. Vis Moot. They participated in the competition either last year or the year before last and will support this year’s team as coaches. Interested parties can register at the email address vismootcoach@gmail.com. Further information can be found here.
